Claudia’s Story

What No One Tells You About Breast Reconstruction
— and Life After.

Most women think the hardest part is getting through treatment.

For me, some of the hardest parts came after — especially when it came to reconstruction and figuring out how to feel like myself again.

When I was diagnosed with breast cancer in my early 40s, my focus was simple: get through treatment.

Like many women, I moved quickly from one decision to the next — surgery, reconstruction, recovery — while trying to stay strong for my family and keep life as normal as possible for my three kids.

Reconstruction was one of the most complex parts of that journey. It wasn’t just a medical decision — it was emotional, deeply personal, and at times overwhelming.

But what I didn’t expect was that some of the hardest parts would come after treatment.

The part no one really prepares you for

As a woman navigating cancer, I wasn’t just a patient.

I was also managing a household, showing up for my family, and trying to keep life moving forward — all while processing what was happening in my own body.

Many women in this phase are holding a lot.

They are caregivers, partners, and often the ones keeping everything together — even while navigating a life-changing diagnosis.

And that makes decision-making even harder.

It’s not just about choosing a procedure.
It’s about making those decisions while carrying everything else.

When the path doesn’t feel right

After my mastectomy, I was initially guided toward implants — without really being presented with other options.

At one point, my tissue expander was overfilled to a size I never wanted. I felt physically uncomfortable and emotionally disconnected from my body.

I remember looking in the mirror and not recognizing myself.

Not just physically — but emotionally too.

It didn’t feel like me.

And deep down, I knew: this didn’t feel right.

But like many women, I was exhausted — from treatment, from appointments, from trying to hold everything together.

And when you’re that tired, it’s hard to advocate for yourself.

Finding my voice

It took time, but eventually something shifted.

I started asking more questions.

I began researching on my own.

I connected with other women who had gone through similar experiences.

And slowly, I realized: I had more options than I had been told.

I didn’t want implants.

I wanted something that felt like me.

That realization led me to explore flap reconstruction — and ultimately to choose a path that aligned with how I wanted to feel in my body long term, supported by the team at the Center for Restorative Breast Surgery— who truly listened.

Thinking beyond the short term

One of the biggest shifts for me was moving from short-term thinking to long-term vision.

Instead of asking, What’s the fastest solution?

I started asking, How do I want to feel in my body years from now?

That question changed everything.

For me, it wasn’t about perfection.

It was about wholeness.

What this experience taught me

Going through reconstruction taught me something I carry with me today:

You are allowed to ask questions.

You are allowed to take your time.

You are allowed to choose what feels right for your body.

And most importantly:

You are the CEO of your body.

What I see now

As I’ve connected with more women since my own experience, I’ve noticed a pattern.

Many are navigating these decisions while also juggling family, caregiving, work, and everything else life brings.’

It’s not just the medical decisions that are hard.

It’s the combination of:

  • physical recovery

  • emotional processing
  • and the mental load of continuing to hold everything together

That can feel overwhelming.

And beyond that, there is often a deeper layer.

Identity shifts.

Priorities change.

Energy feels different.

Ongoing side effects don’t just disappear.

At the same time, many women are trying to rebuild a life that feels meaningful — and find their way back to a sense of joy.

How this shaped my work today

Over time, I found myself in more and more conversations with women navigating similar decisions.

What started as sharing my own experience became something deeper.

I stepped into patient advocacy, began writing and sharing resources, and eventually found my way into coaching — not because I had planned to, but because I kept seeing the same gap.

There is no shortage of information.

But much of it doesn’t take into account what real life actually looks like.

Women are often given recommendations, checklists, and “shoulds” — without support for how to navigate them while managing a family, work, recovery, and everything else they are holding.

And what I’ve come to see is that this is one of the biggest gaps in support.

Not a lack of information —
but a lack of support for how to actually live it.

The challenge isn’t just knowing what to do.
It’s figuring out how to live it.

That space — between information and real life — is where I now support women through coaching and survivorship-focused programs.

A resource I wish I had

During my own journey, I often wished for something simple and honest — a way to understand my options without feeling overwhelmed, and to hear what this actually feels like beyond the medical side.

That’s what led me to create a guide for women navigating reconstruction — something I wish I had during that time.

You don’t have to do this alone

This phase of the journey deserves more attention, more honesty, and more support.

There is no one “right” choice — only what feels right for you.

And you don’t have to figure it out on your own.
