100% success rate achieved by New Orleans doctors
May 2008 – New Orleans, Louisiana – Nearly half of all women diagnosed with breast cancer choose breast reconstruction following mastectomy according to the American Society of Plastic Surgeons. For women who opt for immediate breast reconstruction a revolutionary Nipple-Sparing Mastectomy (NSM) procedure offers the patient a more natural looking breast by preserving its natural appearance and provides a considerable psychological benefit. Doctors Frank DellaCroce and Scott Sullivan of the Center for Restorative Breast Surgery (CRBS), leading pioneers of the procedure, are the first surgeons in the world to report a 100% success rate. As published in the February 2008 issue of Annals of Surgical Oncology, DellaCroce and Sullivan have performed 82 consecutive cases with no development of necrosis of the nipple-areola complex.

The NSM preserves the breast skin and nipple area. The procedure, which removes the breast tissue under the skin and nipple, is performed through a small incision below the nipple. This allows for a more natural looking reconstruction while avoiding additional scars on the breast. A traditional mastectomy generally leaves a scar across the reconstructed breast and removes the nipple and areola. With skin/nipple-sparing mastectomy, breast tissue is removed while a “shell” of skin is left behind. The envelope is then filled with tissue from the abdomen or buttocks. A skin/nipple-sparing mastectomy must be accompanied by immediate breast reconstruction.
