Immediate breast reconstruction is performed at the same time as your mastectomy; therefore you are never faced with a disfiguring mastectomy scar or the total loss of a breast. Immediate breast reconstruction offers several advantages over delayed reconstruction. There is a significant psychological benefit, by lessening the impact of mastectomy on a woman's self image and well-being; cosmetic results tend to be better with immediate breast reconstruction; and fewer surgeries, shorter recovery and a lower risk of complications make it a safe and beneficial alternative to delayed reconstruction, when the option is available.
